An EU reform agreed by agriculture ministers in December 2007 aims to improve the competitiveness of the European wine industry. These new regulations bring in simpler demands for wine labels.

From 1st August 2009, simpler labelling rules allow quality to be based on protected geographical indications / designations of origin. Appellation d'Origin Protegée (AOP) and Indication Geographique Protegée (IGP) labels can be placed on wine labels to guarantee their geographical production. The labelling laws allow the mention of grape variety and vintage on the wine label.
